During the holidays, we’re surrounded by the excitement of gifts, gatherings, and celebrations. Yet for so many, this season also brings an undercurrent of heaviness. It might feel puzzling—why does grief seem to rise just as we’re seeking joy?
Here’s why: biologically and energetically, our lungs process feelings of joy. But as we open ourselves to joy, grief—its emotional counterpart—can also surface. Grief and joy share the same spectrum, and the depth of our grief creates the capacity for joy to fill.
